What is DuckDuckGo?

DuckDuckGo is a kind of Search Engine that lets you take total control of everything you do on the internet. It basically offers protection from online trackers and hackers as you browse. Unlike Google, DuckDuckGo doesn’t track your history or any of the sorts. For over a decade, the company worked hard to give the public an internet they can trust. They promoted the “Same Internet, More Privacy “ believe while making the internet equally accessible to all.

History of the Company

The idea for DuckDuckGo first came up on the 29th of February, 2008 in a very dusty basement. The idea was to figure out a way to make Search Engine experience better and also more secured. However hat same year, on the 25th of September, an announcement was made to the Reddit Community and Hacker News.

Along the line, it was discovered that for some reasons, DuckDuckGo still tracked the search history and they didn’t want that. In the founder’s words “We decided to make a bold move and not track your search history because tracking is creepy “. This was discovered as well addressed on the 15th of March,2010. They also put up a Large billboard that read “Goggle tracks you, we don’t” in their Backyard.

On November 30,2011, Caine Tighe was employed thus making him the first official employee ever years after Gabriel, the founder was the only one. Later that year, they moved to Paoli,  PA and it became their Headquarters. Thereafter, the company just kept growing that they have over a billion searches daily currently.

Donations

Although DuckDuckGo started as a pretty small company, they relied on a lot of other projects to balance them finally. Luckily those projects paid off thus they decided to give back by making donations every year. Some of the yearly donations made include

They did the same thing in 2021 but donated $1M dollars to 22 organizations.

How do they make Money?

As a result of the decision to not track its users, DuckDuckGo can not earn as easily as other search engine do. Although the common ground of earning is through ads, it is a lot more difficult for the company and we will explain why.

While other Search Engines show you adverts based on your Personal Information, collated search history, purchase history and other personal browsing information, DuckDuckGo do not have that Luxury. They make their own money from Private ads and also affiliate partnership on the Search Engine.

Note: It is important to note that asides their income generating revenue DuckDuckGo is being funded by 20 investors. Their most recent investors are Bracket Capital as well as Quiet Capital.

No! DuckDuckGo is very independent from Google. It can be used however as an alternative to Google. Some may argue that it is even better.

By and Large, it is important to understand that there is no perfect search engine. DuckDuckGo could lack something other engines lack and also vice versa. However, if you want to browse the internet without fear of being tracked or watched, DuckDuckGo is the one for you!
